Things to Do in Brixham
Go to listing ↓Brixham is a working fishing harbour on the southern edge of Torbay, still home to one of England's busiest fishing fleets. Its steep streets tumble down to a colourful quayside lined with trawlers, seafood stalls and a full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind.
Beyond the harbour, the town blends maritime history with classic Devon coastline β Berry Head's clifftop nature reserve looks out over Torbay, while the South West Coast Path threads through fishing coves on either side of town. Pirate heritage runs deep here too, celebrated every year at the town's own festival.
Whether you're after fresh-off-the-boat seafood, a harbourside pint, or a coastal walk with sea views, Brixham's compact centre makes it easy to explore on foot, with plenty to see, eat and do within a short stroll of the harbour.
Brixham History
Brixham's history is inseparable from the sea. Long before it became a holiday destination, it was a working fishing settlement, and by the 19th century had grown into one of the busiest fishing ports in England β credited with developing the fast, seaworthy sailing trawlers that later spread around the British coast, earning it the nickname "the Mother of Deep Sea Fisheries". The harbour that visitors stroll around today was built to service that fleet, and its layout still reflects centuries of maritime trade.
The town has its place in national history too. In November 1688, William of Orange landed at Brixham with his fleet at the start of what became the Glorious Revolution β an event still marked by a statue on the harbourside. A little over a century later, the clifftop fort at Berry Head was built to defend the anchorage during the Napoleonic Wars, its gun emplacements still visible on the headland above the town. Together, the fishing heritage and this real defensive history give Brixham's harbour its distinctly maritime, well-worn character.
