Things to Do in Dartmouth

Dartmouth sits where the River Dart meets the sea, a steep, colourful town built around one of the most sheltered natural harbours on the South Devon coast. Its waterfront is dominated by sailing boats, the Royal Naval College standing above the town, and streets of timber-framed buildings dating back centuries.

The town has long been a naval and maritime hub — Dartmouth Castle guards the estuary mouth, the Royal Regatta fills the harbour every August, and the steam railway across the water at Kingswear links the town to Paignton along one of Devon's most scenic stretches of coastline.

Beyond the water, Dartmouth's narrow lanes are packed with independent boutiques, galleries and restaurants, making it as good a town for browsing and eating well as it is for boats.

Dartmouth History

Dartmouth owes its existence to its harbour — a natural, sheltered deep-water anchorage at the mouth of the River Dart that has drawn ships for centuries. In the medieval period it was one of England's most important trading ports, and fleets gathered here before setting out on crusading expeditions to the Holy Land. Dartmouth Castle, built at the narrow harbour entrance in the medieval period, was designed specifically to defend the estuary mouth against ships trying to force their way in.

The town's naval connections continued into the modern era with the opening of Britannia Royal Naval College in the early 20th century, which has trained generations of Royal Navy officers on the hill above the town and remains a prominent landmark visible from the water. Dartmouth's long relationship with sailing is also celebrated each year at the Dartmouth Royal Regatta, one of the oldest regattas in the country, reflecting a maritime tradition that stretches back far longer than the town's more recent life as a visitor destination.
