Things to Do in Teign Estuary

Teignmouth and Shaldon sit either side of the Teign Estuary on Devon's south coast, linked by a footbridge and a passenger ferry — two very different towns just a few minutes apart.

Teignmouth is a Georgian seaside town with a working harbour, a long pier and a promenade backed by the red sandstone cliffs the English Riviera coastline is known for. Shaldon, across the water, is a quieter village of colourful cottages, independent shops and a sheltered beach.

Together they offer classic Devon seaside scenery — dramatic cliffs, a working harbour and sandy beaches — without the crowds of the bigger resorts further along Torbay.

Teign Estuary History

Teignmouth has been a working port since at least the medieval period, and its exposed position on the coast meant it saw real conflict — in July 1690, during the Nine Years' War, a French raiding force landed and burned part of the town, one of the last occasions on which a hostile force landed on English soil. The event is still marked locally, a reminder of how exposed this stretch of coast once was.

In the centuries that followed, Teignmouth's docks became a major export point for Devon ball clay, shipped from the town to potteries around the world, alongside a long shipbuilding tradition. Across the estuary, Shaldon developed as a quieter counterpart, its character shaped by smaller-scale fishing and boatbuilding rather than the docks. Teignmouth itself also grew a Georgian and Victorian seafront as sea bathing became fashionable, giving the two settlements the contrasting but complementary characters they still have today.
