Things to Do in Totnes & Dartington

Totnes is a historic market town on the River Dart, known across Devon for its independent, alternative streak — a high street of artisan shops, organic cafés and centuries-old buildings leading up to a Norman castle at the top of the hill.

Just outside town, the Dartington Hall estate adds a cultural and educational dimension, hosting arts events, gardens and a long-running community of makers and artists that shapes much of the area's character.

Together, Totnes and Dartington offer a slower, more independent-minded alternative to the coastal resorts nearby — a town built as much around ideas and craft as it is around the river that runs through it.

Totnes & Dartington History

Totnes is one of the oldest towns in Devon, with roots stretching back to the Saxon period and a recorded history as a fortified, walled market town by the medieval era. Totnes Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification, still stands above the town, and sections of the original town walls and a medieval gate arch survive along the historic high street — a rare, well-preserved example of a small English market town's medieval layout.

The town built its early prosperity on trade along the River Dart, particularly wool, and that mercantile, independent character has persisted in different forms ever since. Just outside town, Dartington Hall dates back to the medieval period, but its modern reputation was shaped in the 1920s, when it became home to a pioneering trust dedicated to progressive education and the arts — a role it still fulfils today, and one that continues to give Totnes and Dartington their distinctive, independent-minded identity.
